Best Sediment Filters For Well Water: Reviews & Guide 2020

This post is going to be great for all the people out there that are using the well as the primary source of water supply.

I will explain why I encourage you to get a sediment filter and also I will select the best sediment filter for well water currently available.

So let’s get started!

Now, why you should care?

Okay, you might argue that well water is much better than the city supplied as it comes from the natural source.

Yes, you are right!

Well water is a great source. It is full of minerals, and if you don’t live in the industrial area, it is a definitely better option.

However:

Compared to city supplied water, well water contains a higher number of sediments such as rust, sand, dirt, metals, an increased amount of minerals, and small particles.

This leads to a poor taste and can cause the odor.

Now:

Such sediments as metals can accumulate in your body and cause troubles to your health in the long term run.

These can be the following:

  • Increased risk of cancer
  • Central nervous disorders
  • Digestive problems

I know that…

… filters can be quite expensive, and I want to show you that cheaper options are also available.

Bear with me as we are going to talk about absolutely affordable ways to remove sediment for your whole house under the $100.

Spin Down Filters

Most of the filters that I will talk about in this article are also known as spin down filters. Let’s explain a little bit on what these are and what benefits they bring to you.

Here is the thing:

The so-called Spin Down filters are usually used as the pre-filtration stage in use with the proper whole house filters.

The main benefit they offer is that they are capable of filtration of very contaminated water at the very high flow.

Generally, these are removing only larger particles out.

Now:

The way it works is that water enters the chamber it is swirled or spun if you like.

Basically, the spin pushes particles out, and those are then collected at the bottom of the chamber.

The water passes through the filter screen into the house.

The good thing is:

Such filters have a long lifespan. I mean, we are talking about 20,000 gallons of water.

Personally:

In my cottage house, I used one of these until we have been connected to the city supply and changed the filter type.

It was fascinating to see how after a couple of weeks, the filtering screen changed its color.

Although the water seemed to be clean, even such a basic filter proved that we were wrong.

On top of that, you are protecting your home plumbing and home appliances from internal damage that can be caused by sediments.

Anyway:

Without any waiting let’s have a look at my selection and introduce them.

First things first:

Before I go any further with this review, I must mention that this product DOES NOT include the first filtration cartridge.

That’s right:

Unlike other products I used to review, this particular one does not include the initial set of filter, which is a shame.

Essentially, this is just housing, and you need to get a filter separately.

The good thing is:

It comes with the standard dimensions 10” x 4.5”, which gives you an option to select a filter yourself.

I mean, don’t just assume that the branded filters are always better.

From my own experience, I can say that there are plenty of non-branded cartridges that are doing the same if not better.

So please, see this fact more as the opportunity of choice.

I have given you the dimensions, so the last thing you need to do is to find a cartridge that matches them.

Now:

Let’s talk about other parameters of this unit.

What I really like about it, is the solid build of the whole product. This is also confirmed by many people who have purchased this housing.

Additionally:

Culligan comes with the filter lifespan indicator that will tell you when about to replace the cartridge.

But don’t worry, as the cartridge can last roughly 3-6 months or about 20,000 gallons.

Again, this depends on the quality of water in your area and the type of filter.

As always I urge you to change filters no longer than every 6 months.

Here is the video to give you an idea.

What you need to know is that the size of the unit is quite big, so make sure to leave it enough space.

I would also suggest you get an additional O-ring.

Why?

The thing is that O-rings are quite fragile.

If you are getting a filter or anything that has o-ring in it, I would always get some additional, just in case.

Regarding the warranty, the housing comes with a 2-year limited warranty to cover breakdowns.

Note, that warranty does not cover the filtration cartridge.

Pros
  • Solid build
  • Standard cartridge size
  • Electronic reminder (battery required)
  • 2-years warranty
  • Housing wrench
Cons
  • Doesn’t include initial filter
  • Reported damaged O-ring in a package

Conclusion

This is a great way to get the basic treatment of your water. The unit is not expensive as advanced filters.

The fact that it allows you to use custom filters is also significant, as now it is entirely up to you what kind of a filter you use and what’s more important what pores size it will be.

Unfortunately, though, it does not come with the initial filter so make sure to add one to your basket when buying.

Here is the thing:

The following three products are going to be the so-called “Spin-Down” filter, as I was explaining at the beginning of this article.

The iSpring is first of them so let’s have a look at what it has to offer.

Now:

I have been talking about iSpring so many times on my website that I am not going to talk about the company again.

If you want to know more about iSpring, read my other post.

I feel that this is important to note, that compared to first Culligan filter, that is actually a 1-stage filter, spin down systems are not capable of removing as many contaminants.

I mean, these are designed to remove larger sediment particles.

The good thing is:

This unit comes with a reliable stainless steel mesh filter, and the pore size is 50 micron.

I really like the fact that it is used out of the metal, as you probably know it is just me loving steel products.

It just feels more solid, robust therefore reliable.

However, there is a range of sizes available from 1000 micron down to 50.

I would definitely advise you to get one with Siliphos to prevent a scale build-up in your appliances.

Naturally, the smaller size of pores the more contaminants can be captured.

So, generally speaking, 50 microns is not bad at all.

As always:

The filter needs to be flushed every 3-6 months, but preferably sooner than later.

Make sure to change Siliphos filter no longer than every 6 months to keep protecting your appliances.

What I love about this:

Remember when I have mentioned that spin down units are great when it comes to the performance at high flow?

Well, the iSpring is capable of working at the unbelievable flow rate of 20 GPM.

This means that it is not going to lower down overall house pressure.

Great to use especially in case you have troubles with pressure.

Here is another thing:

As I have said earlier spin down filters are collecting the sediment at the bottom of the housing.

There is also a release valve that allows you to get the water with sediment out of the unit.

Now:

The iSpring has come up with an idea to have a hose barb fitting at the bottom of the housing.

This is a great way to reuse the wastewater.

Why?

You can just connect the hose, switch the valve and use water with sediment to water the garden.

It is not going to cause any harm as sediments are just natural particles that are present in water and you are not going just to flush it down.

Big plus from me!

iSpring also gives you the 1-year warranty on this product, so pretty standard and nothing special here.

It might be confusing which is the inlet and outlet side of the filter.

For this reason, the manufacturer has put a little arrow that shows you the flow direction.

I love it!

Pros
  • Fast flow rate
  • HIgh capacity
  • Metal filter
  • Hose fitting
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • I cannot see any cons for the filter for the given budget. I would probably like to see some other filters media with smaller pore sizes, even at the cost of pressure

Conclusion

For the given price, this is an incredible product. I mean just imagine how much you would pay for destroyed appliances or even for something like unclogging pipes in your house?

Now, iSpring will dramatically reduce the chances of such issues happening, especially if you are using well water.

Beyoung Spin Down Sediment Filter

Last update on 2024-03-25 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Not gonna lie:

Beyoung is pretty much the same as iSpring.

Well, not quite the same. It’s cheaper actually!

Yes, that’s right!

Let’s see what it has to offer.

First of all, I want to mention that it comes from China.

Please don’t panic that the quality will be horrible as in fact, users are delighted with the overall build of the product.

To be honest:

Even though, iSpring is a US company their products are also built in China.

So, either way, China is involved in most of the products nowadays, and if something is made there, it doesn’t mean it is going to be of poor quality.

Now:

Despite its price Beyoung, doesn’t indulge in anything to iSpring.

I have mentioned this previously that I would like to see the filter with the smaller pores size, even at the cost of the flow rate.

Well, here it is!

This unit offers a smaller size of pores which is 40 microns, which means that you are protected even more.

The mesh filter is also made of stainless steel.

Regarding the flow rate, the filter is able to handle a flow rate up to a 20 GPM.

Pretty similar to the iSpring.

Make sure to flush it regularly every 3-6 months, so the filter lasts longer for you without any pressure drops.

As well as iSpring, you will find the hose barb fitting at the bottom of the unit.

Unfortunately:

You might experience that the machining on the connection can be poor. This was reported by a few users.

Also, I wasn’t able to find any information in regards to a warranty so you will have to contact the manufacturer for more details.

Pros
  • Price
  • Great quality
  • Great flow rate
  • 40 microns mesh filter
  • Hose barb fitting
Cons
  • Thread machining could have been better
  • You need to contact manufacturer for warranty

Conclusion

Beyoung is the amazing and even cheaper alternative to iSpring.

It even takes the lead in some aspects such as mesh filter size, where Beyoung offers a 40 micron, compared 50 offered by iSpring.

Although, it is a good product be careful about the thread cutting, as this might affect the installation process.

Also, there is no information on the warranty available, and you will have to contact the seller to get more information.

  • The Rusco sediment trapper filters use centrifugal separation technology to filter sediment from water.
  • The Rusco filtration system has a polyester screen filter.

Last update on 2024-03-25 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Here is the thing:

What makes this product different is that it is an entirely made of various types of plastic.

This includes PVC top connection as well as polymer resin cover, and finally the polyester filter screen.

Now:

Basically, Rusco has designed this product and marketing it as the filter for water that is heavily polluted with sediment.

This particular product is equipped with a 100 mesh size which is about 150 microns.

This is much more than previously mentioned systems.

But as I said it has been designed for larger particles.

If your water contains a lot of sand, this is the way to go without clogging the screen.

However:

The following question arises!

Why would you use plastic as the material for a product that supposed to be used for the higher amount of sediment?

I mean, it just doesn’t make any sense.

It’s like building all new heavy duty car for rangers and make it out of plastic.

Okay, you might argue that it is a high-quality plastic, the way I see it, it’s still plastic.

Anyway, that’s just another opinion of the person who likes steel products.

The good thing:

There is a broad variety of screen sizes ranges from 24 to 1000 mesh. Also, there is a stainless steel screen option available.

Also:

What else makes this unit different to previous two is that it has the special chamber at the bottom, where sediment is collected.

As you can see from the picture, it takes about half of the housing, so naturally, there is the intention to use this filter for heavier pollution.

Basically, this chamber is separate from the screen unlike with other two that have minimal space for sediment; thus you need to flush them more frequently.

Basically:

When it comes to the flow rates, various types offer different rates.

For example, 1” and ¾” connections are able to handle up to 25 GPM.

Bigger sizes such as 1.5” or 2” can go as high as 100 GPM.

For most of us 25 GPM should be more than enough, but in case you need more there is an option.

Now:

Rusco gives a 1-year warranty for this its sediment trapper, so there is nothing unusual in here as well.

Pros
  • Sediment chamber
  • Variety of screen options
  • Easy installation
  • Good flow rates
Cons
  • Plastic materials make me wonder about the quality and lifespan of the product

Conclusion

I like the different approach from the Rusco to spin down filters as it offers a bottom chamber for collected sediment.

However, I just don’t trust plastic materials, and users seem to agree with me on this. It would definitely be a fantastic product if Rusco used steel as the primary material.

Perhaps unsurprisingly:

Geekpure is similar to Culligan, with the difference of size.

Meanwhile:

Culligan is designed for cartridge size 10” x 4.5”, Geekpure is bigger and is created for size 20” x 4.5”.

Now:

The connection of the housing is 1” standard size.

The package includes the following items:

  1. Big clear housing & head
  2. Plastic wrench
  3. Metal bracket

I have mentioned this already but in case you missed it.

The fact that it doesn’t come with filter gives you the advantage that you can select whatever filter you want to put in there.

This could be simple polypropylene filter to capture sediment or carbon block that will also remove chlorine and improve overall taste.

I like the transparent housing of the Geekpure. This way you can actually see what is going on inside the filter and whether it actually works.

Also, you will know when to replace a cartridge by merely looking at the color of it but again remember no longer than 6 months.

The good thing is:

Geekpure comes with the pressure release button in case the pressure has built up inside the filter.

Also, the operating pressure for this particular filter is set up to a maximum of 90 psi.

Make sure you are not exceeding it as you might cause damage to the filter and actually in your house.

Similarly:

As for the Culligan, I would encourage you to have a look for the additional O-ring as some users reported that it leaks.

Sadly, the manufacturer does not provide the information about the warranty, and you will have to contact him to get it.

I always feel like I am being scammed when the information about the warranty is not provided anywhere on the page.

It feels like they can tell different things about warranty to different people.

What else, could be a reason for not telling people the conditions of the warranty?

Let me know in the comment section what do you think about warranties!

Pros
  • Big standardized size
  • Clear housing
  • Pressure release button
Cons
  • Leaking O-ring
  • I would like to see the reminder similar to Culligan’s
  • No warranty information – upon request

Conclusion

If you are looking for a big housing to put a carbon cartridge in as the pre-filtration stage, you shouldn’t be dissapointed.

It gives you basic features you need, so don’t expect anything significant out of it for the given price range.

Although there is nothing wrong with Geekpure, I feel like Culligan is more robust and I get something more.

Mesh vs Microns

Now:

I know I was talking about different filter sizes, and it might have been confusing at times, so I have decided to bring a bit of clarity into this.

I have created this great table below that shows the equivalency between mesh and microns.

MeshMicrons
10 2000
20 841
40 388
50 282
60 231
80 177
100 149
200 74

If you ask me what size you should select?

I would answer my favorite, it depends!

You need to have a look at what kind of sediment you are dealing with.

Is it just rust or something else is there as well?

To remove standard sediment, I would look for size between 60 to 150 mesh.

Generally speaking, the smaller the micron, the better the performance, and the higher mesh, the better the performance.

Final Words

So we have come to the end of this article, but no worries as I have much more prepared for you.

In terms of the winner, I guess it is pretty clear that for me it would be Culligan and iSpring, only because of the quality and features they offer.

Now it’s your turn to tell me about your experiences with spin down filters.

  • Have you used them before?
  • If so, what brand?
  • What problems have you faced using them?

Don’t forget to share the article with your friends and family!

Sharing is caring!

Is sediment well water filter can remove other incompatibilities? and what is the best in today’s market? I hope you willing to answer my questions.

    1. Hi Samantha,

The sediment filter only removes sediment, so it is not the ideal solution on its own. But in combination with whole house filter it makes a great team. There are so many things to keep in mind before getting a filter, so there is no one answer to suit to everyone. Just a few of the things, do you live in flat or house? Do you want to treat water for whole house or just for drinking/cooking? I would suggest you to browse through my blog as I believe you will get more answers 🙂 You can probably start here.
